| Just before 01:00 CEST on Tuesday, 25 October, Igor Simcic’s Esimit Europa 2 crossed the finish line in Marsamxett Harbour, Valetta, Malta to claim line honours in the 2011 Rolex Middle Sea Race. The Slovenian maxi completed the course in an elapsed time of 61 hours, 24 minutes and 35 seconds. |

In 2010, Esimit Europa 2 was also the line honours winner, with an elapsed time of 54 hours, 52 minutes, 32 seconds. Igor Simcic’s 100-footer adds this to their list of line honours wins this season, which included the Giraglia Rolex Cup. As Esimit Europa 2 crossed the line in Malta, the nearest yacht, Niklas Zennström’s J/V 72 Rán (GBR), was approximately 90 nautical miles behind.
The maxi sails with an impressive 20-man crew, which included the all-star afterguard of skipper Jochen Schuemann and navigator, Juan Vila. Both were competing in their first Rolex Middle Sea Race, but have raced together in the past that include being part of the Alinghi 2007 America’s Cup team. Schuemann described the early part of the race, where they got away from Rán. |

“The start was interesting, a squall came through, so there was more breeze than expected. It was good speed from the beginning. They (Rán) gybed away at the first mark, so we had a big split; we had a different scenario planned. Even though they are smaller, they were the real competition for us, so we didn’t allow too much separation. So we sailed towards them and gybed in front, to windward. If we were to take a little more risk, we should have play more our side, because it proved later to be the best way. We played a little bit maybe too safe, but on a long race you have tactics and you look for your direct opponents.”
“It’s one race I’ve always wanted to do,” said Vila. “It’s a different kind of distance race. I was a bit nervous because everyone told me how difficult it was getting around Sicily. There are many high points where you have to be very careful.” |

Vila continued with a recap the early part of the race approaching Sicily, were they got a good jump on the fleet.
“We kept some land breeze longer and we stretched there. Everyone on the boat did a good job of keeping the boat going and we probably managed to keep going with the little bit of wind that was going north. To keep the boat moving in these light airs, we knew it would be tricky; as the Rolex Middle Sea Race is; especially the first night. We thought it would be a deciding point of the race, getting by the eastern coast of Sicily and through Messina. From Stromboli it was light, but we managed to find some clouds, so we were jumping from cloud to cloud.” |

From Messina, Esimit Europa 2 had a spinnaker run from Stromboli, then a slow approach to the tip of Sicily, where there was no wind.
“We struggled to keep the boat going and then we put our nose into the southeasterly and kept stretching slowly,” said Schuemann. “There were three or four thunderstorms, very violent with rain and breeze. These huge clouds were changing the wind pattern dramatically, from no wind to really big puffs and the direction shifting more than 90 degrees. It wasn’t easy to handle it, but I think we passed all those things quite nicely.” |

From Trapani, Esimit had a close reach to Pantelleria, rounding early Monday morning, then sailed upwind to Lampedusa, where the maxi encountered a rough sea state.
“There were lumpy seas, where the current was pushing from behind and making waves that were very short and very high, a little bit boat-breaking stuff,” said Schuemann. “Actually we broke a runner there, which was difficult because we had to replace it with a halyard and sail with a Solent only, instead of a jib.” |

| After Esimit Europa 2 crossed the finish line, just off the Royal Malta Yacht Club in the early hours of Tuesday, the boat was brought alongside the yacht club pontoon for a dockside presentation. Owner and project manager Igor Simcic was presented with a Rolex Yacht-Master timepiece by Malcolm Lowell Jr. from Edwards’ Lowell, as well as the R.L.R. Line Honours Trophy by Royal Malta Yacht Club Commodore, Georges Bonello DuPuis. |

the finish line at 11:10 CEST, with an elapsed time of 2 days,
23 hours, 40 minutes. Behind Rán are Andres Soriano’s
Mills 68 Alegre (GBR) and Laurent Pellecuer and Oscar
Kouyukhov’s 90-footer Med Spirit (FRA), estimated
to arrive later in the afternoon. |

The bulk of the fleet is now in a line between Pantelleria and Lampedusa, sailing in a south-southeasterly of between 12 to 15 knots and if the wind holds, they would start arriving at the finish anytime from this evening on.
Last night’s weather conditions which included a very rough sea state, took their toll on the fleet. Just after midnight, Jonas Diamantino’s Comanche Raider II from Malta, retired with rudder problems and headed to Favignana. Another Maltese boat, Aaron and Edward Gatt Floridia’s Otra Vez suffered damage last night, but was continuing in the race. |

“We broke the bowsprit last night,” said Sean Arrigo Azzopardi, crew member onboard the J/122. “We were carrying the Code Zero a bit too high in a big chop and seem to have blown it. I don’t know if we can get it fixed, I hope we don’t need to use it.”
“We had big waves rounding Favignana and about 20 knots of wind,” he continued. “When we freed off slightly to make Pantelleria, we were sailing at a true wind angle of 050 degrees, the wind settled, big waves, and we were doing about 8.5 knots. It was pretty comfortable. Now, it is a beat to Lampedusa. We’re not sure if we are going to need the bowsprit. The wind looks as though it might come around, but we are not too sure since the wind has been doing its own thing!” |

A total of 70 yachts started the 32nd Rolex Middle Sea Race on Saturday October 22 and only two boats have retired; the Class 40 Pogo 1 (GER) and Comanche Raider II (MLT). The course record set in 2007 by George David’s 90-foot Rambler (USA), stands at 47 hours, 55 minutes, 3 seconds. The final prize giving is at 12:00 CEST on Saturday October 29 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.
